Luigi Lucioni (Italian/American, 1900-1988) - September Ascension, an early landscape painting of a panoramic view of the Green Mountains in the environs of Manchester, VT, with scattered rain showers mixing with patches of sunshine in the distance. Oil on artist board, 5" x 8", signed and dated 1944 in lower right. Excellent condition, recently cleaned & with minor touch up; offered in a period carved wood frame, with the artist's original paper label affixed to the reverse, providing the title and date, together with a Christmas presentation signed by the artist - "for Ruth for Christmas, Luigi." Lucioni was a noted painter and engraver. Born in northern Italy, he immigrated to the U.S.A. in 1911 and settled in N. Bergen, New Jersey. He studied at Cooper Union and the National Academy of Design in New York and exhibited widely at the Penn. Academy of Fine Arts, Corcoran Gallery, Art Institute of Chicago, Carnegie Institute, and at other fine galleries and institutions. He maintained a studio in Washington Square in NYC until 1945. He is best known for his realistic detailed still life paintings and many landscape etchings. Beginning in 1929, he spent part of each year in Manchester Depot, Vermont, where he loved to paint red barns and white birch trees.
