English George III Chippendale tall case clock by James Butler, Bolton, Lancashire. Circa 1760. A Georgian north country tall clock in mahogany by a fine clockmaker. This clock features a double scroll pediment with carved rosettes, three original turned finials, intricate fretwork carvings, checkered line inlay, and carved, fluted columns with Corinthian capitals. The waist is adorned with egg and dart carving above a frieze of fretwork, with fluted quarter columns with carved capitals flanking a central door in flame veneered mahogany with shaped, molded top. The figured mahogany continues on the base panel, with a surround of line inlay and canted fretwork corners, and is supported on ogee feet. The brass 8-day movement with anchor escapement has an arched brass dial with silvered chapter ring, fire gilt Rococo spandrels, separate seconds and calendar dials, with rotating phases of the moon and a landscape in the arch. Dimensions: 96" ht. (with finials) x 23" wide x 10.5" deep. Excellent running restored condition.
