Vermont village in winter landscape by Arthur B. Wilder (American, 1857-1949), oil on artist board, 12"x16", circa 1920s, unsigned. An unidentified winter scene with barns in the foreground along a snow covered country road. Arthur Wilder is best known for his winter scenes, and one even hung in the White House during the Coolidge administration. It is almost certain that the location of this subject is in the area surrounding Woodstock, Vermont. This painting is unsigned but descended through the Wilder family to his granddaughter and is just one of several paintings and drawings that we are offering that came from his descendant's estate. Provenance available to a purchaser. Condition: There is some bowing to the artist board; otherwise very good condition. Arthur Wilder was a native of Vermont, and he developed an interest in drawing at an early age. He enrolled at the prestigious Art Students League in New York City and studied with such noted American painters as Thomas Dewing, Charles Yardley Turner and William Sartain. He also studied portraiture and figure painting with Thomas Eakins and took lessons with the tonalist Dwight Tryon. In 1897 Wilder became the manager of the Woodstock Inn, Woodstock, VT, a position that he held until his retirement in 1935. Wilder's paintings were hung on the walls of the Inn and also at the Boston Watercolor Society. Most of his works were painted of the hills and pastures in and around his beloved Woodstock.
