"Drake's Well" by Vincent Maragliotti (Italian/American, 1888-1978). Signed lower right and dated 1976. Oil on artist board. Size: 22" x 24", and offered in a modern gilt frame. This unusual painting was commissioned for Pennsylvania's Bicentennial exhibition, celebrating its historical events. Edwin Drake drilled the world's first oil well in 1859, in Titusville, PA, thus creating the future of oil prospecting. The artist, Vincent Maragliotti, emigrated from Italy as a child and is now best known for his large murals that adorn theatres, hotels, public buildings and private residences across the country, including the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, the New York Stock Exchange, the Copley Plaza Hotel in Boston, Pennsylvania Capitol building, and the Gulf Oil building in Houston.
