Misty Harbor scene by Thomas R. Curtin (American, 1899-1978), oil on canvas, circa 1940s, 20" x 24". This canvas depicts a North shore harbor, probably Gloucester, Mass., with the focal point being a pleasure sailing craft whose sails form a shimmering reflection in the still waters of the harbor, providing a contrast both in light and tone with the surrounding commercial fishing boats and processing plant in the background. Thomas Curtin was born in Pittsfield, Mass., one of seven children of Irish working-class parents. In the early '20s, Curtin moved to NYC to study at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League, where he met John Carlson, who would become his mentor & friend. After his formal training in NYC, Curtin returned to Pittsfield and spent his summers on painting excursions in western Mass., Vermont and the coastal artist communities of Gloucester and Rockport. In 1957, he retired from teaching and settled in Cambridge, Vermont. He is probably best known for his portrayals of the vistas surrounding Mt. Mansfield.
