Lower Hollow, Dorset, Vermont landscape painting by Edward Burrage Child (American, 1868-1937), oil on canvas, dated 1894. Size: 18 inches x 24 inches. Offered in an Arts and Crafts style carved gilt wood frame. This is the earliest image of Dorset Hollow that we have come across, and is a fine example of the work by the southern Vermont artist, Edwin Burrage Child. Edwin Child undertook formal training at the Art Students League in New York City and became assistant to John Lafarge in his painting. Though Child is best known as a portraitist, he also painted landscapes of the area surrounding his home in Dorset, VT. This unusual pastoral work provides an atmospheric perspective of the Vermont countryside, with mist rising from the mountains and with a patch of blue sky peeking through a hole in the clouds. The painting is signed and dated in the lower left. Condition: The surface has been professionally cleaned; there is an older small patch to the canvas in the lower right and some touch-up spots to the canvas surface.
