Davies was born in Utica, New York, and began drawing at an early age. When he relocated to Chicago, he attended the Art Institute of Chicago and later the Art Students League in New York City. His early style was influenced by the school of tonalists, and such artists as George Inness. However, his works are eclectic, and he later became fascinated by Cubism and modernism.
