James Abbott McNeill Whistler (American, 1834-1903) - Palaces, Venice. Etching and drypoint in black ink on heavy Japan paper. Signed in pencil in lower left margin with a large butterfly and 'imp'. Ref: Kennedy 187, second state of three. Bearing a David Tunick, Inc., New York, gallery label on the reverse. Size: 10 inches X 14 /14 inches. Offered framed. A rare etching by this great American artist issued in 1879-80. This etching is the second state of three. 'The Palaces' is from the first Venice set and is Whistler's largest etching, depicting the Sagredo and Pesaro Palaces at Santa Sofia.
