Arthur B. Wilder (American, 1857-1949) - Deep Snow. Oil on canvas. Signed in lower left and dated 1922. Canvas size: 22 inches x 18 inches. Deep snow is virtually obscuring the split rail fence in this dramatic Vermont winter landscape painting. Deep blue shadows fill a narrow ravine, while the dark green outlines of solitary evergreens provide a stark contrast to the blanket of white. Arthur Wilder is perhaps best known as a painter of snow. His granddaughter, Joan Pearsons, remarked that he always painted on-site, in the open, and was never deterred by freezing temperatures. He would travel in his horse and cart to the chosen spot, set up his easel, and then commence his painting. As manager of the Woodstock Inn, Arthur promoted all kinds of winter recreational sports for the guests and was instrumental in the development of Woodstock as a ski center. In fact, Woodstock was the site for the first ski tow in the United States, opening on Christmas Day, 1934. This painting is offered in as found condition, with some overall craquelure to the surface. It is still in the original weathered wood style frame.
