New York coin silver milk or cream jug by Joel Sayre, New York. Circa 1798-1801. Size: 5 5/8 inches H x 5 1/4 inches W x 3 inches D. Weight: 6.6 troy ounces. Excellent condition with no dents or repairs, with original owner's monogram 'JEC' engraved on both sides in script initials. A milk jug of oval bombe form on a plain collet foot with harp shaped handle. Maker's mark 'J. Sayre' in script, within a conforming rectangle, struck on the underside. Joel Sayre (1778-1818) was born Nov. 2, 1778 in Southampton, on Long Island, NY, where he worked as a silversmith from 1798-1801. In 1802, he relocated to New York City where he maintained a shop until 1811, working first at 437 Pearl St. and then in Maiden Lane. The Sayres were a family of silversmiths, including Joel, John and Paul. This jug was owned by a descendant of both the Sayre and Pelletreau silversmithing families. It is unusual to find an example from this era in such an excellent state of preservation. The matching teapot is also available as a separate purchase. Examples of Joel Sayre's silver are in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
