Thomas R. Curtin (American, 1899-1977) - Rushing Stream. Oil on masonite. Mid 20th century. Size: 18 inches x 24 inches. Estate stamp signature in lower right and marked on reverse with estate stamp and estate inventory #315. Excellent condition and recently professionally cleaned. Offered in an antique 19th century gilt frame. In this painting, Thomas Curtin shows a stream rushing through a pastoral landscape in summer, with green pastures and farms scattered amongst the hills. Curtin was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. He studied at the prestigious National Academy of Design and Art Students League, both in New York City. Here he met his friend and mentor, the painter John Carlson, by whom he was greatly influenced. Curtin became affiliated with the North Shore Artists Association on Cape Ann, and spent his summers painting in the coastal communities of Gloucester and Rockport. He became friends with Emile Gruppe and Aldro Hibbard. In 1957, Curtin moved to Cambridge, Vermont, where he continued to paint landscapes 'en plain air.' Provenance: From the Estate of Thomas R. Curtin through Clarke Galleries, Stowe, VT.
