Thomas R. Curtin (American, 1899-1977) landscape painting titled - Winter Sunshine. Oil on canvas. Circa 1940s. Canvas size: 24 inches x 30 inches. Offered in the original frame. In this painting, dappled sunlight filters through forest birches, casting shadows on the snowy banks of a woodland stream and creating a sparkling rainbow of colors on the surface of the water. Thomas R. Curtin was born in Pittsfield, Mass. and painted in Cape Ann, Maine, and then, from 1943, in Vermont, where he is known for his landscapes, and most especially for his winter scenes. He was friends with his contemporaries, John Carlson, Emile Gruppe and Aldro Hibbard. He studied at the prestigious National Academy of Design and the Art Students League, both in New York City. John Carlson's influence is apparent in Curtin's rendering of the light in this work. Condition: Nice original condition, with no repairs; offered in the original frame. Provenance: ex. coll. John H. Victor, Chicago, IL (Victor Manufacturing and Gasket Co.).
