Marion Huse (American, 1896-1967) oil on canvas - Haying in Vermont. Size: 22 inches x 30 inches. Circa 1950s. Incised signature in lower left corner. Sympathetically framed in an antique, flat profile 4 inches wide dark oak frame. Excellent condition. In this bold landscape Huse's technique makes use of a palette knife to accentuate the clouds and outlines of the mountains, while adding strong colors of orange and yellow for the active work in the hayfield in order to form a contrast with the calming blues and greens of the natural backdrop of the mountains behind. Marion Huse was a Massachusetts and Vermont painter and printmaker who worked in a variety of styles, from realism to abstraction. Her subjects included portraits, landscapes and still life. Born in Lynn, Massachusetts, she studied in Boston at the New School of Design and then in Pittsburgh at the Carnegie Institute. In the 1920s, she studied at the Cape Cod School of Art with Charles Hawthorne and then, in 1925, became the founder of the Springfield Massachusetts School of Art. Marion eventually relocated to Pownal, Vermont, where she maintained a studio.
