Maurice Utrillo (French, 1883-1955) signed street view of Rue Saint-Vincent, Montmartre, Paris. Circa 1918. Oil on artist board. Size: 21 3/8 inches x 28 3/4 inches. Signed lower right, "Maurice. Utrillo". Maurice Utrillo was one of the great French masters of modern art of the 20th century. Maurice was born in the Montmartre district of Paris. His mother, Suzanne Valedon, modeled for artists, including Renoir, Puvis de Chavannes, Toulouse-Lautrec, Degas, and others, and herself became an artist with assistance and instruction from Edgar Degas. She introduced Maurice to painting in an attempt to distract him from his obsession with alcohol. This effort failed to prevent his drinking; however, it did allow him to develop his talents as an artist, and within a few years, the works of this self-taught painter were the talk of the Parisian art world. Utrillo painted the streets, walls, and cafes of his Montmartre neighborhood. He was fascinated by the texture of the buildings. His early paintings were 'en plein air' creations, usually finished within a few hours and in a single session. From about 1909 onwards, he painted mainly in his studio from post card views. This example of the Rue Saint-Vincent is very similar to two paintings pictured in Paul Petrides catalogue raisonne, "L'oeuvre complet de Maurice Utrillo" (1959-1974), Vol. 2, illustrated as Plates 736 & 738, which date from about 1918. Condition: as found, requiring a cleaning, some bowing to lower left corner of the artist board. Frame is of the period with chips to gilding. This is the first time that this painting has been for sale since its purchase in Paris soon after it was originally painted.
