Primitive portrait of Reverend Ebenezer Gay of Suffield, Connecticut. Oil on canvas. Unframed. Unsigned. Circa 1770s. Size: 35.5 inches x 29 inches. This portrait is very similar to one attributed to the portrait painter Winthrop Chandler that was published by David A. Schorsch in his exhibition catalog in 1989 and which recently sold at auction at Sotheby's in Sept. 2010. Our portrait has descended through the family of Ebenezer Gay's daughter, Lucy Gay Swan, of Woodstock, Vermont. This portrait differs from the Schorsch Chandler portrait only in the treatment of the background, which in our painting is a shaded black and red without the detail of the library behind. Ebenezer Gay (1718-1796) was the fifth minister of the First Congregational Church of Suffield, CT and was a graduate of Harvard College (Class of 1737). Ebenezer Gay's line-a-day diary for the years 1738-1794 has been preserved in the Connecticut Historical Society, and several of his sermons are extant. This portrait was reproduced in "Sibley's Harvard Graduates, Vol. X, 1736-1740," published by the Massachusetts Historical Society in 1958 (a copy of which will be included with the portrait), which contains biographical sketches of those who attended Harvard College in the Classes of 1736-1740, including Ebenezer Gay. This portrait has remained in the original family residence in Woodstock, Vermont, that was built by Lucy Gay's husband, Benjamin Swan, in 1801, and it is now being offered for sale on the market for the first time. We are uncertain as to whether this painting is also to be attributed to Winthrop Chandler or whether it was a copy ordered by the Gay family a few years later in the 18th century. Condition: this portrait was professionally restored and relined in about 1990. A photograph of the painting prior to restoration is provided as a part of this listing. Full particulars regarding provenance will be provided to a purchaser.
