Federal period mahogany sideboard, probably Boston, Massachusetts area. Circa 1815-1820. This fine Sheraton sideboard comes from an early residence in Claremont, New Hampshire and features a bowed central section with a stepped top with rare central demi-lune recess. It is adorned with bands of lunette inlay reminiscent of the work of the cabinetmakers John and Thomas Seymour. The appearance is enhanced with strongly figured and book matched mahogany veneers, which are accentuated by finely fluted, turned legs. There are three frieze drawers situated above the three storage compartments and two liquor bottle drawers. The construction of the bowed central drawers is noteworthy because of the use of unusually thick and shaped timbers in their drawer fronts. Condition: offered in an old as-found finish, but with some of the lunette inlay missing and with one front leg requiring reattaching (an old clean break that has come loose); also a single gouge in the top board that according to family legend was caused by a gun being accidentally discharged. Brass pulls and locks are original. A few age lines in the veneers. Size: 72 1/8 inches length x 24 1/2 inches depth x 42 5/8 inches height.
