Georgian sterling silver mug by Peter and William Bateman, London, 1808; maker's mark overstruck by that of George Gray. The Batemans were one of the most famous families of English silversmiths in the 18th and early 19th centuries. This baluster form mug has a leaf capped double scroll handle and rests of a spreading circular foot. Full set of clear hallmarks below the rim to the side of the handle. The maker's mark of Peter Bateman, second son of Hester Bateman, is overstruck by that of George Gray, a frequent occurrence on pieces manufactured by both Hester and Peter Bateman. George Gray apparently bought many small items from the larger firm to be sold under his name. The 'PB' of Peter Bateman's mark is just legible above the 'GG'. The entire mark would at this date have also included the 'WB' of the William Bateman partnership below, though this is obscured by the overstamp of Gray. Excellent condition, with just a very tiny dimple at one spot on the side of the body. No repairs; no wobble; no monogram, crest or erasures. Size: 4.75 inches ht. x 5 inches across handle x 3.5 inches diameter. Weight: 10.98 troy ounces.
