Olaf Wieghorst portrait of a Native American Indian
"Head of an Indian" by artist Olaf Wieghorst (Danish/American, 1899-1988), gouache on paper. Size: 9.5" x 7.75" (sight). Excellent condition. Wieghorst was an illustrator and painter who is known for his portrayals of Cowboys and Native Americans and their horses. He began painting in 1916, and his employment included working as a ranch hand at the Quarter Circle 2C Ranch, whose brand became his own artist's insignia. He later moved to El Cajon, CA, where he resided from 1945-1975. This painting is offered in what is probably the original gilded wood frame, which bears two gallery labels of the Kennedy Galleries, Inc., New York, and the Altermann & Morris Galleries, Alabama. The painting is signed with his monogram O-W over the 2C brand referred to above.
