| Charles Paul Gruppe (American, 1860-1940) autumnal Dutch landscape with windmill. Watercolor on paper. Circa 1920. Signed lower right. Offered in an antique giltwood frame. Size: 11" x 17" (sight). Provenance: Stanton's Galleries, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Excellent condition. Charles Gruppe was born in Canada but travelled to Europe in the 1880s, where he took up residence in the Netherlands for some 20 years. He was greatly influenced by the Dutch school of painting and his palette reflects the dark tones of the Netherlands painters. His later years were spent in Cape Ann, Massachusetts, and he died in Rockport in 1940. He was the father of Emile Gruppe. | ||
