A scarce artist's fully articulated wooden mannequin, probably French. 19th century. Size: 19 inches ht. Mannequins were an important tool in the artist's studio. Each was carved to model the human form and utilized wooden ball joints that allowed the figure to be manipulated into realistic positions. In our example, the face has been carved with facial details, as well as the hands, rib cage and feet. These figures were used in the artist's workshop and were frequently passed down from master to pupil. They appeared in the workshops of artists, such as Leonardo da Vinci, Correggio, Rembrandt, Gainsborough, Thomas Sully, John Singleton Copley, Sir Joshua Reynolds, Courbet, Degas and Cezanne. Condition of this example is quite good, with a lovely darkened patina. No breaks to limbs or extremities.
