Arts and Crafts Grueby pottery vase, of a bulbous form with narrow neck and ribbed decoration in a dark green matte glaze. Early 20th century. Size: 7 1/7 inches ht. x 4 3/4 inches diameter. Impressed maker's mark under base - GRUEBY BOSTON, MASS. Excellent condition. The Grueby Faience Company produced ceramic tiles and vases and was a part of the American Arts and Crafts Movement. The company was founded in 1894, in Revere, Massachusetts, by William Henry Grueby, who began experimenting with matte glazes and simple organic forms for his ceramic wares. He eventually developed the cucumber glaze for which the firm is so widely recognized.
