Churchill Ettinger (American, 1903-1984) original watercolor painting of a solitary skier. Circa 1950s-60s. Size: 14 inches x 20.5 inches (sight). Churchill Ettinger is recognized for his many illustrations, etchings and paintings of sporting subjects. He studied at the National Academy of Design and at the Art Students League in New York City, and also taught at the New York School of Industrial Art. He became a commercial artist and, being an avid outdoorsman and sportsman, was attracted to the most popular sporting magazines, for which he produced many "covers." In the 1950s, Ettinger moved to Weston, Vermont, where he etched and painted outdoor scenes with subjects that featured angling, hunting, skiing, waterfowl and hunting dogs. He also produced over 180 drypoint images during his lifetime. (Biographical information is derived from the AskArt archives.) This painting is offered in a modern metal frame with acid free double matting. Although Ettinger frequently painted skiers on the mountains of Vermont, he also painted in the border region of the Swiss/Italian Alps in Europe. The treeless peak in the background would suggest an Alpine subject for this example, with a lone skier in a yellow parka descending a sunny slope through deep, fresh powder in the foreground.
