Thomas R. Curtin (American, 1899-1977) landscape painting of a Vermont Village in Winter. Oil on canvas board. Size: 18 inches x 24 inches. Date: circa 1960s. Artist signed in lower left. Offered in an antique gilt wood plein air frame. A dramatic winter scene of a village nestled in the rolling hills of northern Vermont, hi-lighted by rays of a late afternoon sun, with a steepled church prominently positioned in the center, together with an adjacent mill building and small waterfall. Two birch trees catch the light to frame the painting on the left, while the mountains and sky beyond are hued in shades of pink, as are the reflections of the buildings in the stream below the falls. This work exemplifies Thomas Curtin's genius in rendering the subtleties of sunlight on his subject. Curtin was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. He studied at the prestigious National Academy of Design and Art Students League, both in New York City. Here Curtin found a mentor and friend in the artist John Carlson by whom he was greatly influenced. Curtin spent much time painting on Cape Ann in the coastal communities of Gloucester and Rockport, and he became affiliated with the North Shore Artists Association, where he became friends with Emile Gruppe and Aldro Hibbard. Beginning in the mid-1940s, Curtin began to spend part of his summers in Vinalhaven, the legendary island of painters on the coast of Maine. In 1957, Curtin moved to Cambridge, Vermont, where he continued his landscape painting 'en plein air.' Excellent as found condition. Condition is excellent.
