Pair of Knight's helmet sterling silver pepper casters by George Unite and Sons, Birmingham, 1881. These scarce pepper pots or shakers were created by the specialist silversmith firm of George Unite in 1881-1882. They are not weighted and are crafted in the form of a medieval knight's armored helmet with pierced and movable visor. Each pot is hallmarked on both the underside and on the outside of the base with a complete set of matching marks. Condition is very good, apart from a minor seam separation visible just above and below one of the visors that is only noticeable upon very close inspection and which does not detract from the appearance or effect the use. No dents or repairs and no monograms. The caster is filled through the open visor. These do not unscrew. Size: 2 3/8 inches ht. x 2 inches diameter; 4.15 troy ounces total. George Unite specialized in silver small work for the dining table and for personal adornment items. To find a matching pair is very unusual.
