'February' - Connecticut Barn in Winter painting by Eric Sloane (American, 1905-1985). Oil on masonite. Size: 24 inches x 48 inches. Signed and titled 'February' in lower left and also signed on the reverse, together with the artist's address in Cornwall Bridge, CT. Eric Sloane is considered to be one of the great American masters of landscape painting in the 20th century. He is best known as a painter of barns and as an author of books portraying early American life. In this impressive painting, we see a dilapidated Connecticut barn as it appears in the midst of winter during the month of February. The scene is executed with Sloane's classic attention to details, from the saplings in the stone wall to the old wagons inside the barn, and the clouds in the sky are a trademark of the artist. Eric Sloane was born Everard Jean Hinrichs on February 27, 1905. He grew up in New York City and on Long Island and began dabbling in art as a sign painter. He enrolled briefly in 1923-1924 at the New York School of Fine and Applied Art and in Yale's School of Art, but did not complete his courses, and, in 1925, left home for Taos, New Mexico. In Taos, Eric fell in love with the sky and a new medium:oil paints. He became obsessed with clouds and weather, and upon his return to the east coast took up aviation. In fact, Amelia Earhart was one of his early patrons. For the sake of his appeal to the American public, he soon adopted the name Eric Sloane, after his mentor, the painter John Sloan, adding a final vowel so as not to claim a family relationship. The name Eric is said to have been taken from the middle of the word America. The subject painting is one of Sloane's later works, created when he was residing in Cornwall, CT. Excellent condition.
