Emile Albert Gruppe (American, 1896-1978) - Mount Mansfield Vermont in winter from Pleasant Valley. Circa 1940's. Oil on artist board. Size: 12 inches x 16 inches. Signed in the lower right. An early diminutive winter landscape of Mt. Mansfield as viewed from Pleasant Valley on the north side by this noted American impressionist. We consider this little gem to be on of Gruppe's most accomplished paintings. His use of a palette knife to accent the light on the snow along the ridge and fence lines, as well as his ability to capture the glow and shadows of a late afternoon sun, when combined, have created a remarkable work. Offered in an antique gilt leaf frame. Emile Gruppe studied at the National Academy of Design (NYC), at the Grande Chaumiere (Paris), and with John F. Carlson, Richard Miller, George Bridgman, Charles Chapman and Charles Hawthorne. Although Emile is best known for his depictions of harbors and coast lines along the North Shore of Massachusetts, he also had a home in Jeffersonville, Vermont, where he painted the countryside surrounding Mt. Mansfield.
