Rare Yuan dynasty red lacquerware oval tray, Chinese, 14th century, carved with two three-toed dragons encircled by a border of crashing waves. Size: 8 3/8 inches x 6 3/4 inches x 1 inch deep. Condition: two spots where the lacquer is missing on the top of the rim, some old filler on the foot ring on the under side, some cracking to the lacquer and a few tiny spots of loss to the incised lacquer in the background. The back of the tray has a border carved with a scroll design, which frequently appears on lacquer items from this period. The dragons have small heads and their bodies thicken between the fore and hind legs. This item has descended from the estate of a private collector.
