Charles Abel Corwin (American, 1857-1938) - Morgan horse in a Pasture. Signed and dated 1896 in lower left. Oil on canvas. Size: 22 inches x 38 inches. A stunning portrait of a horse standing in a pasture setting, bordered by field stone walls, with haystack and farm buildings in the distance. This painting was found in Woodstock, Vermont and was most likely a commissioned work. Charles Abel Corwin was born in Newburgh, New York, and most of his career was spent in New York City, where he was best known as a muralist, lithographer and painter. He also taught at the Art Institute of Chicago and studied in Munich under Frank Duveneck. The art created later in his career became lighter, and his subjects were landscapes, seascapes and animals. He was a member of the Chicago Society of Artists, the Salmagundi Club and the Bronx Artist Guild. Condition is excellent, with three repairs to small punctures. The painting has been recently professionally cleaned, with touch-up, and is offered in a new gilt wood frame.
