Country Road in Winter - Thomas R. Curtin (American, 1899-1977). Oil painting on artist board. Circa 1960's. Size: 8 inches x 10 inches. Signed in the lower left. Condition: Very good but would brighten with a professional cleaning. Offered in what is probably the original frame. In this attractive small-sized painting, Thomas Curtin directs the viewer's eye down a winding country lane in winter to a farm with barns and farmhouse, set against a background of rolling hills where the snow is gradually melting into spring. Curtin was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. He studied at the prestigious National Academy of Design and Art Students League, both in New York City. Here Curtin found a mentor and friend in the artist John Carlson by whom he was greatly influenced. Curtin spent much time painting on Cape Ann in the coastal communities of Gloucester and Rockport, and he became affiliated with the North Shore Artists Association, where he became friends with Emile Gruppe and Aldro Hibbard. Beginning in the mid-1940s, Curtin began to spend part of his summers in Vinalhaven, the legendary island of painters on the coast of Maine. In 1957, Curtin moved to Cambridge, Vermont, where he continued his landscape painting 'en plein air.'
