Late 18th century American silver teapot by Joel Sayre, New York. Circa 1798-1801. Size: 8 inches H x 12 3/8 inches W x 5 inches D. Weight: 20.6 troy ounces (including handle). Excellent condition with no dings, dents or repairs. Engraved with original owner's monogram 'JEC' on either side of the body. A large-size teapot of oval bombe form on a plain collet foot; curved ebony handle; the high domed, hinged cover adorned with a classical urn finial; elegant goose neck spout. Maker's mark 'J. Sayre' in script, within a conforming rectangle, struck on the underside. Joel Sayre (1778-1818) was born Nov. 2, 1778 in Southampton, on Long Island, NY, where he worked as a silversmith from 1798-1801. In 1802, he relocated to New York City where he maintained a shop until 1811, working first at 437 Pearl St. and then in Maiden Lane. The Sayres were a family of silversmiths, including Joel, John and Paul. This teapot was owned by a descendant of both the Sayre and Pelletreau silversmithing families. A similar example by Joel Sayre is in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It is unusual to find a specimen of this age in such original condition. The matching milk jug is also available separately.
