Thomas R. Curtin (American, 1899-1977) "Mt. Mansfield View", oil on canvas board, circa 1965, 12 inches x 16 inches. Estate stamped lower left and on reverse, together with estate inventory #127. In this panoramic landscape painting, Thomas Curtin has rendered a view of Mount Mansfield in the distance, silhouetted against a sky filled with cumulus clouds highlighted in pink by a setting sun. A shady brook meanders its way through a valley, drawing the observer's eye to the mountain beyond. This painting is pictured in the catalog, "The Splendor of the Simple: The Paintings of Thomas R. Curtin, 1899-1978" (Clarke Galleries, Inc., 1993, p.11.) Excellent condition and recently professionally cleaned. Offered in a contemporary gilt, carved plein air frame. Curtin was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. He studied at the prestigious National Academy of Design and Art Students League, both in New York City. Here Curtin found a mentor and friend in the artist John Carlson by whom he was greatly influenced. Curtin spent much time painting on Cape Ann in the coastal communities of Gloucester and Rockport, and he became affiliated with the North Shore Artists Association, where he became friends with Emile Gruppe and Aldro Hibbard. Beginning in the mid-1940s, Curtin began to spend part of his summers in Vinalhaven, the legendary island of painters on the coast of Maine. In 1957, Curtin moved to Cambridge, Vermont, where he continued his landscape painting 'en plein air.'
