| Theresa Ferber Bernstein (American, 1890-2002) portrait of her Housekeeper Sewing. Oil on masonite. Circa 1918. Size: 20 inches x 14 inches. Signed in upper right. Theresa Bernstein was a female artist who painted in the Ashcan style of Social Realism, with her portrayals of scenes of everyday life in New York's poorer neighborhoods. A native of Philadelphia, Bernstein studied at the Philadelphia School of Design For Women and at the Penn. Academy of Fine Art. In 1912, she relocated to New York City, where she studied portraiture at the Art Students League under William Merritt Chase. Later, she became known for her impressionistic beach scenes. She married the artist, William Meyerowitz. This painting was purchased directly from the artist by the current owner, and it portrays the artist's housekeeper sitting in a chair, while mending an item of clothing. Condition is excellent.
