Afternoon Light & Snow winter landscape painting by Emile Albert Gruppe (American, 1896-1978), oil on canvas, circa 1940, 24 inches x 20 inches. An early winter scene of a stream meandering in a forest setting by this noted American impressionist. Emile studied at the National Academy of Design (NYC) and at the Grande Chaumiere (Paris), and with John F. Carlson, Richard Miller, George Bridgman, Charles Chapman, and Charles Hawthorne. Although he is best known for his representations of harbors and coast lines along the North Shore of Massachusetts, he also had a home in Jeffersonville, Vermont, where he painted the countryside surrounding Mt. Mansfield. Condition is excellent. The painting has been professionally cleaned. It is signed by the artist in the lower right corner, "Emile A. Gruppe," and is titled on the reverse of the stretcher, "Afternoon Light and Snow." The silver leaf frame is believed to be the original.
