| English George III rectangular tea caddy in satinwood veneer. Circa 1790. The front and lid are adorned with oval fan paterae inlaid with harewood and the edges have ebonized stringing. Lenticular bone keyhole escutcheon. The interior dividers have been removed and the box is lined with red velvet. Original hinges and lock. Condition: very good overall with some fine hairlines in the veneer and with two areas of minor damage to the ebonized stringing at the two front corners of the lid. Dimensions: 7.5" x 4.25" x 4.5" high. Tea was a valuable commodity in the 18th century, so it was kept in a locked container with its access controlled by the lady of the house. | ||
