Large English cutlery mahogany knife urn. Probably late Victorian. Cutlery urns became popular in the late 18th century as decorations to grace the dining-room sideboard, and their popularity continued throughout the Victorian era. In this example, the cover may be raised on a central support and held in place by a brass button catch. The fitted interior has slots arranged in concentric circles that hold a 48-piece flatware set (four-piece place settings for twelve). The urn's cover has a carved pineapple finial, and the urn is supported on a turned pedestal with square base. It is offered in its original finish and is in excellent condition; however, a vertical seam has separated along one side of the urn and there are two minor scuff marks. The underside of the base is felt lined and is marked with an impressed number '4828.' Size: 25" high x 11.5" .
