| A Victorian tilt-top Loo table. Circa 1860. Size: 46 inches x 33.75 inches x 28 inches ht. This oval gaming table has a wonderfully ornate book-matched burl walnut veneered top, trimmed with a contrasting ebony and inlaid burl border. The walnut pedestal base is adorned with four turned columns and a delicate central finial, all supported by four carved saber-form legs with scroll feet. "Loo" was a trick-taking card game for five or more players, popular as a gambling game during the 18th and 19th centuries. The term Loo is a shortening of the term Lenterloo (from the French lenturlu), a meaningless refrain used in lullabies. Tables for playing Loo were popular in the homes of the English upper class during the Victorian era. These table were frequently elaborate, eye-catching pieces of furniture, designed to impress the guests who played on them. The use of exotic woods and matched, decorative veneers made them costly additions to the games room. Condition: excellent. | ||
