| John Joseph Enneking (American, 1841-1916) landscape painting of a wooded scene at sunset with distant church spire. Oil on canvas. Signed lower right and dated 1877. Size: 18 inches x 26 inches. Original gilded frame (as-found). John J. Enneking was one of the most important New England artists of the 19th century. This tonalist landscape, with its subdued earth-tone palette, demonstrates the styles and artists which influenced Enneking's art: tonalist Camille Corot, Barbizon school painters like Jean Millet and Charles Daubigny, and Impressionists Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro. This painting has descended through the same Woodstock, VT family since it was originally acquired in the 19th century. The painting was professionally restored some years ago. | ||
