Revolutionary War era, 1778, bond issued by the State of Massachusetts Bay and promising to pay Isaac Marshall interest at the rate of 6% per annum for the loan of 104 pounds, 2 shillings, a substantial sum for that time. This document is a fine example of the art of the copperplate engraver and has an elaborate border with trimmed and shaped counterfoil on the left side and a wonderful vignette of a patriot brandishing a sword and encircled by a rattlesnake with thirteen rattles. This subject was a favorite of Blanchard's, who studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts.
