Large English cutlery mahogany knife urn. Probably late Victorian. Cutlery urns became popular in the late 18th century as decorations to grace the dining-room sideboard, and their popularity continued throughout the Victorian era. In this example, the cover may be raised on a central support and held in place by a brass button catch. Large English Victorian sarcophagus form tea caddy, fashioned of rosewood veneers with mother-of-pearl floral inlay to cover and front, resting on compressed ball feet. Wooden carved figure of an owl perched on a branch, with painted surface and glass eyes (probably Japanese). 19th century or earlier. Wonderfully carved.
